After Vietnam it was lowered to 18 under that argument, but then raised again by Reagan.

The problem with raising the age to vote is that it reeks of big government.

In 1984, the National Minimum Legal Drinking Act, written by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and influenced by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), required all states to enforce a minimum legal drinking age of 21 or else risk losing 10% of all federal highway construction funds.

Sure, and voted in by GOP Senate, and signed into law by a GOP president. Why is this so hard for you to accept?

Regan at first opposed the raising of the drinking age merely on the principle that it should be up to each state. He later reversed that position and firmly supported the raising of the dinking age to 21 as a federal law. States that did not comply would have a percentage of federal highway funds held back.

So basically it was both parties.

At least they know full well about the beer thing when they choose to sign up, a better deal than those who were signed-up during the '60s-'70s through no choice of their own.

Yes. And Regan firmly supported it.

You can die for your country at age of 18, but owning a handgun at that age can be illegal.

Pretty odd indeed.
