I still question if the debating posters are using the same criteria for measuring tax burden.

Thats why I asked where sag got his statistic from.

2006 Federal Tax Rate Schedules (http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/article/0,,id=150856,00.html - broken link)

Clearly shows that the rich pay more taxes as a percentage of their income then the poor.

I mean the government does everything right. Right? Their is no reason why we shouldnt just send them more money so the government can pander to the special interest groups and increase the welfare state. WE must make the government bigger to limit individuals freedoms and more regulation.

Listen UP YOU SOCIALIST AND COMMUNIST MOD CUT.

I question those who want GOVERNMENTS to do more for them. At the cost of your freedom and thru taxes on your labor gives power to the IRS and the FED. Which will print money and borrowing from communist China to support the government spending. This is what you want to give more money too. They already have to much money as it is which is part of the problem. Remove the income tax and lower for all Americans taxes and reduce the size of government. But these people want Our Government even Bigger with higher taxes.
AND These PEOPLE WANT the Government to manage healthcare and schools and it will all be "FREE".
The only cost of your "free programs" the American Citizen will suffer is the cost of freedom and individual liberty to be given to the elite few in washington. This sytem will have control over your livelyhood and make you a slave to bigger government.

If my government comes to tax me anymore and goes full socialist, it's time for revolution again. The one thing these people don't count on is I am an American and not some socialist european wuss who has bought into these lies. I will not bow down to another vise of tryanny. Revolt and Revolution again are at hand, just as they taxed the tea we will throw all you socialist and communist into the sea starting with ted kennedy in boston.
Live free or DIE.

Thank you
Proud American
You're crazy.

Personally, I think it's every man for themselves.
Government should only pay for the government needs (courts, policemen, fireman) and the military.

A base tax of 10 or 15%, for all, at most.

Everything else shall be left to the people.
If you want your kid to have a good education, then you pay for private school. There is absolutely no need to beg on the president's door crying your kids need a proper education. You fix that. It's your child.

If you want good healthcare, then you pay for a plan. Don't depend on your employer and/or government.

The list goes on and on. However, When I get older and have kids, why should I pay the PUBLIC SCHOOL tax when my kids are going to be enrolled in private schools? or why should i be paying for the girl in the ghetto who decided to sleep with 4 guys and waits on the welfare line?

Your actions. Your problems.

And, Socialism is stupid, and, Communism is even stupider.

You see, the arguments become a bit tainted if Social Security is included in defining the tax payment base. Social Security ultimately has a payback, and is heavily tilted (last I saw a decade ago) towards higher % of payback to lower earners. It is a quasi-income redistribution program providing greater assistance and payback to lower wage earners. Therefore, payments in the Social Security system seem to be more like purchasing an annuity to me, at least for the lower wage earners.

Considering that the rich do not collect on Social Security, all that does is sku the statistic even further. They are forced to pay more taxes into a "pot" with no chance of ever collecting it back, its an added tax burden with no benefit.

Yes they stop paying at a certain % of their income, but one might question why they are forced to pay into another tax program that they can not take advantage of.

I think the wealthy do collect, but the % of payback vs amount paid in is much smaller, plus they are taxed on half of the benefit. I suspect those stating the poor pay higher taxes are doing it through the Social Security contribution, and counting the employer portion too.

Not taking sides here, I just want to establish an understood baseline for discussion.
