Sessions has issued a statement telling trump he will continue as AG to follow the law. It's a rather mild statement BUT it is the FIRST time Sessions has responded publicly to a trump tweet.

Be careful what you wish for. At this point, we'll likely end up far worse off if Sessions did quit. I hope he has the stomach to stick it out, at least until Mueller's investigation concludes.
The article goes step by step to fact check the assertions made by the President in his tweets this morning about the Inspector General and, by extension, Sessions.
I think this paragraph from the article link you posted pretty much sums things up:
The background: What Trump apparently wants is for Sessions to launch a full-scale criminal investigation into the applications the FBI and Justice Department made in 2016 to conduct surveillance on his onetime campaign adviser, Carter Page.
Trump is still so desperate for some sort of "official" finding that there was NO COLLUSION. NO COLLUSION. Which is why every time an indictment or new story comes out that specifically does not contend there was collusion, but also does not specifically contend there was not any collusion, Trump immediately Tweets, "NO COLLUSION. NO COLLUSION" before he realizes that particular event really did not help his case.
As always, it helped Trump. It took attention away from his misdeeds for a minute.
