I get hundreds of spam calls a day, every day. It’s a 24/7 thing.
About half the calls come in from hijacked numbers, all over the world. Sometimes there’s a vile recorded message. Occasionally, it will include a death threat. Most of the time, it’s white noise. Easy enough to block the number. My carrier however, thinks it is a feature to allow blocked numbers to leave VM.
The other calls come in as unknown with no phone number.
And my favorite are the calls showing up on caller ID as being from me.
There are apps that allow callers to hijack numbers and make robo prank calls.
What the heck did you do or what happened that got you on this crap list?????
Like did you get George Zimmermans old cell phone number or something?
A lot of mobile phone users are starting to use 'white lists,' which only allows numbers in your contact list to ring the phone. All other callers are put straight through to voicemail.
I've been getting 2-3 calls a week for several months from a spoofer that DOES leave voicemails and it's always the same robo message where they're claiming to have health insurance for sale.
The others call me about student loan debt and credit card debt (a stupid girl with monsterous student loan debt inquired about student loan forgiveness several years ago and made up a fictitious number....mine. I'd curse her but she's already got a 6-figure student loan debt for an English degree and is a barista so that would be redundant. I googled her name and found her blog on-line.)
However they never leave a message.
The problem with cracking down on these scammers is that many are overseas and largely out of reach although there have been some crackdowns in the US recently.
One Russian dude a few years back that was some sort of data king pin selling peoples info to other bad people got caught and put in Turkish prison lol.
They frequently spoof these days with numbers similar to yours since lots of people have similar numbers on family plans etc.
So if your number is 1-312-777-1234 they'll spoof 1-312-777-xxxx
True, because I moved a few years ago and still have the same number. I get about 8 or 9 calls a day from that area. I know it isn't a friend because I already have their numbers on my phone. They never leave a message.

Yep, it is called Neighbor Spoofing. It gets more people to pick up the phone because the number looks more legit. Happens a lot with my work, my home and my cell number. I just don't answer my phone anymore unless I see a name or an actual number I recognize.
I started getting a really increased amount of these nuisance calls about two months ago. And now I get on average 12 a day. The one that is really persistent is the IRS scam, and they do leave a message, though it usually only records the last half, as the robo voice kicks in before the voicemail message finishes.
Those, at least, are amusing, even while annoying, because they always sound so ominous.
[Cue menacing voice] "Call this number within 24 hours or you will be arrested."
They started warning me about that two months ago and so far I'm still here.
It worked in 2003 before spoofing was a thing, but is a joke in 2018.
I get a handful of calls per week from numbers in the same area code and same prefix as mine. I guess they are trying to fool people into answering based on the number being similar.
