An analysis said last night that Intel reports have shown that North Korea is on the verge of total bankruptcy. Their economy is crashing. The severe sanctions that Trump has put on them, especially making China's bank cooperate has brought Kim to his knees. And that's why he asked for a meeting with Trump ASAP

NK has been on the verge of bankruptcy for a long time. Trump hasn't brought anybody "to [their] knees." Trump is an idiot. Do you see any other leader in the free world legitimizing Kim Jong Un? No, you do not. Because the leaders in other countries each have a brain. And they know that someone like Kim Jong Un, who is certifiably insane, is not someone to be reasoned with.

I want to be pleased about this I really do but I cannot help but wonder why this week and why the hurried timing?
Tillerson was pretty much blindsided. The special envoy to North Korea is retiring and not yet replaced. No ambassador to South Korea.
But this is the week when Trump demonstrated with the metals tariffs he will ignore skilled counsel from top economic advisors like Cohn (who he also blindsided) ... overrode defense considerations raised by Mattis ... and in the process rode also roughshod over long-term allies like Canada, although there he has backed down for now.
And then at this precise *moment* Kim Jong-un proposes meeting and quickly?
We can hope that the proposal is a natural outgrowth of talks between N. Korea and S. Korea. Too, there has been a lot of cross signaling that includes the United States, although Tillerson is on record as saying he believed any actual negotiations to be some time away.
So the precise timing is worrisome. There's a lot at stake.
Cohn wasn't blindsided. He knew from day 1 that Trump and his other economic advisors favored tariffs. Cohn lost a few other economic battles before this. His choices were to be the minority voice, go along, or quit and criticize. Bye-bye.
We'll find out whether Trump gets played by NK or achieves something nobody before him has achieved.

North Korea has made these promises before. Trump meeting with NK is idiocy in the extreme. No POTUS has met with a leader of NK because it gives legitimacy to a brutal dictatorship. It tells Kim Jong Un that he matters, that he is on par with other world leaders. Kim Jong Un is a maniac; anyone who thinks that Trump--of all people--is going to "solve" this problem is living in a reality of their own making.
On a related note re yesterday's news: Never before have I seen foreign leaders emerge from the White House, as the South Korean National Security guy and his minions did yesterday, deliver news about his government, to the American people, and then walk back into the White House. Trump was nowhere to be seen. It was beyond bizarre and not a little unsettling. If Obama had allowed this, the right-wingers would be up in arms, screeching about Obama handing our White House over to foreigners. Yet, oddly, not a peep.
Trump needs to go. He is nearly as insane as Kim Jong Un. He is a man with no understanding of how government works, plagued by decades of corrupt money laundering--and cheating people out of their pay--and skirt-chasing, who is barely even literate, who spends his early morning hours tweeting god-knows-what to his salivating, practically unconscious base, and most of his time golfing, who decides on the spur of the moment to put drilling in ANWR into a bill because a friend mentioned it to him (hey, good idea, put that in there, too!). It is beyond surreal that this know-nothing, loud-mouth lunatic is sitting in our White House. No matter what the man says or does, no matter how utterly off-the-rails he is, his base utters not one word of criticism. Not a patriot among them.
