The excuse is that you are assumed "cured" if a stem cell transplant and chemotherapy bring your blood serum levels back to near-normal -- totally ignoring the irreversible bone and organ damage, a lifespan of under 5 years, the debilitating effects of chemo (which may have to continue for the rest of the patient's life), and all the daily problems that prevent you from working (even if a business would take on the health insurance bills and make full accommodations to hire a person dying of an incurable cancer).

Meanwhile, SSDI is a lifetime free ride for drug addicts and alcoholics who contributed very little in SS taxes, (they might get a cursory letter every 5 to 7 YEARS asking if they are still druggies, etc.).

If you think our government provides a "Safety Net" -- think again. It's more like a "Free Ride" for the type of people no sane person would want to subsidize.
It is an abomination of a system, designed to be abused, set up as a Ponzi scheme.

It ought not to even exist in a proper government that is staying within the confines of the powers/authority delegated to it by the Constitution.

IF any private person or company set up an exact copy of this scheme they would be sentenced to many life terms like Bernie Madoff...whose harms and offenses against the people of the US are miniscule compared to what SS has done, continues to do, and will do in the future unless abolished.

Even if you do get SSDI (and most are deserving and had to jump through an incredible number of hoops to get it)... doesn't it revert over to regular SS when you turn 62? That's what I always heard anyway. And if certain people spent their entire adult life getting plastered and never working, those checks will be very very small, right?

So, maybe it's time to stop all the "poor people have it so good" nonsense. It's a scapegoat more than it is reality.
