That being said, I think it is disgusting that any teacher or professor would kick a student out of school for something he or she said that did not encourage violence and/or was not actually hate speech.

No. Another misuse of power to violate the natural rights of the individual because a tinpot tyrant has an ounce of authority and the audience is captive.
The most oppressed group in this country is the free thinking individual on a college campus. By "oppressed" I mean actually having their rights violated on a constant basis and those violations not only sanctioned, but supported by the institution and the government.
So called "intellectuals" are typically the least tolerant of a dissenting viewpoint, when by job description, they should be the most welcoming. Universities are hotbeds of hypocrisy and disingenuous abuses of power.
Good lesson for the student. You can think what you want, but when you are around a leftist with authority, only speak what you are expected to speak. They call themselves open minded, but they suffer no dissent gladly.
My first impression is that she was wrong, however, without having been there, it is difficult to say. Did he simply disagree, or did he get into a prolonged argument with her and disrupt the class? There's bound to be some disagreement in any course on religion, but at some point one party - or both - need to know when to let it go so everyone else can get on with the business of learning.
I would really have to know more about how both individuals behaved to be comfortable forming an opinion.
You poll is fundamentally flawed and useless because there are at least 3 plausible options, but you only offer two choices.
The professor was clearly wrong to throw the student out of class, but would have been perfectly justified in marking the student's answer wrong if given on a test.
I would also add that it is hard to tell what really happened based on this article. I suspect that mere disagreement was not really the problem, but if it was, then the teacher was obviously being oversensitive and foolish. If the student was, in fact, acting rude and disrespectful, etc., then the teacher might have had reasonable grounds for banishing the student. It would be useful to hear from other students in the class.

If the teacher was just plain and simply trying to silence an opposing view, then this has nothing to do with being "liberal", per se, but would rather be an issue of intolerance and stupidity. Foolishness of this sort happens all across the political spectrum.

The disciplinary action suggests his behavior was inappropriate. The student's interpretation it was his ideas that got him kicked out.
Who knows......
