I live in an expensive city and I am infuriated whenever I'm looking for a place to move and see that new, luxury apartments have special low rates for "low-income" people.
You have completely missed my point. Did you only read the first sentence? Whoever wins from people's votes is not what what matters. As a general rule politicians [rep or dem] do, not what is right or good for their community, but what they are paid to put into law by rich people, corporations, or lobbyists.
Thank goodness life is not all about money. There are people who are actually willing to work at a low paying job so that they can help others. People like social workers, day care teachers, caregivers to the elderly, and others who work hard but do not get high pay.
We need to encourage good people who will help others. They deserve a decent place to live too. It's not just for the high earners with boatloads of money.
They have every right to refuse the payment. Their choice to accept the wage. Who are you to say it’s good or bad?
I can certainly have the opinion that large classes of working people were not being fairly compensated for their contributions. The fact they accept the wage doesn't mean they saw it as fair. That's why they fought for a union, elected FDR etc.

In my city if you make $49,999.99/year then you are "low-income" and you can live in luxury 1-bdrm apartments for $1,300/month while someone who makes $50,000.00+ has to pay $2,000/month for the same unit. It's completely absurd on principle (government forcing equal outcomes for unequal productive capacity), but also on practice because it pushes up housing prices.
Same goes for subsidized medical care, Obama phones, etc.
Stop the subsidies! You deserve only what you can afford from the value of your labor! Or else move to Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba, etc.

^^^^^ The first thing I thought about after reading your post above was hearing about, when the ACA was being rolled out, an SF Bay Area couple (two self employed consultants, IIRC) who voted for Obama and supported his healthcare efforts. Then the plan came out, and they ended up intentionally reducing their incomes in order to qualify for a subsidy. I heard omeone asked them about this and they said they supported the idea, but that they thought someone else would be paying for it .
But you have ZERO issue with the bloated military to fight all those pointless wars against people that couldn't attack American soil if you bought them a plane ticket, people who didn't do chit to anyone, but those wars haven't made anyone better- since terrorist attacks are rising, so a few rich dudes can make more money. That you call " patriotism" right?
Why do you care?
Unless your retirement income is above the exemption allowed for people (not specifically retired people) living outside the U.S., you aren't paying for any of it.
Explain. High income people pay far, far more than their fair share of taxes.
Beat me to it.
I want to hear that answer. I wonder if you will get one .
