The other day Trump was threatening the S. Koreans with removing US forces from the DMZ over a trade imbalance.
Only Trump would be stupid enough to make that threat when he just volunteered to negotiate with N. Korea, who no doubt would LOVE to see US troops gone.
Whatever comes to that man's mind wanders out his mouth.
Not sure if this sort of comment just makes some people feel good, but it's absolutely not the case. The man is anything but a moron. He's a business man, first and foremost. He's made good deals and bad deals throughout the course of his life. He "goes with his gut" on many occasions, which sometimes ends well for him, and others not so much. But saying "he's a moron" is a moronic statement in and of itself.
I see from your user profile that you are Canadian. If you don't mind my asking, what has been the reaction to all of this in Canada?
Jaws dropped when Lighthizer, in charge of U.S. NAFTA talks, brazenly lied at a news conference early last month and claimed that the U.S. had a trade deficit with Canada. Our foreign minister and other Canadian trade officials were present when he made the claim.
After that, I doubt that anyone in Canada is surprised by Trump’s comments. The U.S. media didn’t pick up on the falsehood in February or Trump’s tweet in early March, but I’m glad they picked up on the falsehood today.
The political response in Canada is muted as I expected. There is nothing to be gained by calling another world leader a liar when the lie is self evident and being reported widely.

I truly hope people don't seriously think this is the case? I mean, as far as saying "whatever come to his mind wanders out of his mouth". Because I'm sorry, it is plain to see that is not the case. That man knows exactly what he is saying. And he's saying it for a reason. Sometimes many of us may not understand the underlying reasons why he has said or done something, but I guarantee you there is a reason he said it. Don't doubt it for a minute, lest you may start to think he is just some feeble-minded buffoon who poses no threat to superior minds. That would be a big mistake indeed.
Does the U.S. run a trade deficit or surplus with Canada? It depends where you look....
Canadian officials tend to use U.S. data to make their case and the Bureau of Economic Analysis has calculated the U.S. had a $7.7 billion surplus in 2016. But Statistics Canada data show it’s Canada with the surplus in goods and services, totaling C$18.8 billion ($14.6 billion) last year. That’s a $22.3 billion difference between the two measures.
Quote:
Or maybe what the discrepancy between the two national measures is showing is neither side is right. If commercial flows can swing between surplus and deficit depending on how it’s measured, that could be a rough indication the trade relationship between the two countries has become balanced, more or less. Whichever data is used, the deficit (or surplus) is still relatively small compared to total trade between the two countries -- between 1 and 2 percent.

And that’s a big change from the past when the trade balance was clearly in Canada’s favor, no matter which methodology was used. The C$18.8 billion surplus estimated by Statistics Canada for 2016 is the smallest since 1994, the year Nafta came into effect. Since then, Canada’s cumulative surpluses have totaled C$1.2 trillion, the Statistics Canada figures show.
The thing that no one has touched on in this thread yet is the fact that he openly admitted he didn't have a clue what the facts were. This is our CIC bragging that he is so lazy he can't even be bothered to educate himself before speaking to another head of state on a matter that is of vital concern to both countries.
And the cult, true to form, cheers his admission of his unmitigated ignorance. I guess they see themselves in Trump, as it's apparent they are all morons as well.
Since it’s the Trump administration crying foul, Canadian officials say it’s only fair to use the U.S. government’s own assessment of trade imbalances.

Re-exports are the reason for the discrepancies. If China ships goods to USA via Vancouver port -- they often get counted twice -- as a Canadian and a Chinese import to the USA....can't be both -- one or the other....
But -- the point is that Trump said he lied -- he knew he was lying and chose to lie....to an ally.....
If you are okay with that. Then you are okay with that.
