Could it happen again? Ferguson, MO wasn't that long ago. You bet it could happen again.
Now there is social media to plan the Riots. Faster, bigger, anywhere.
The best way to ensure against riots, would be for LE to do a better job in vetting more qualified police officers.
It would also be of great significance for law schools and courthouses to better identify lawyers and judges with extreme political views that prevent them from reaching balanced and equitable decisions.
As we as American citizens continue to maintain our Republic, we must do so with the unrelenting and continual thought that we shall overcome our prejudices and hatred for one another.
Our civilzation can only be sustained by our consistent desire to improve upon ourselves collectively. Since every community and all ethnic groups have their own strengths and weaknesses, we should all work together in order to highlight those strengths and eliminate those weaknesses, once they've been identified.

IMO

The only way to make the greatest overall wholesale sweeping improvement across the entire nation would be to totally reconstruct our educational system.

No student should be able to graduate without also having some form of specialized training in some skill needed by our society. Instead of receiving a HS diploma, a student will instead receive an associate's degree in the field in which they were trained.

The first four years of post secondary schooling (education after high school) should be free, ad long as you can maintain a 3.0 GPA. Therefore, all bachelor degrees should practically be free via governmental subsidies.

If for any reason, an American citizen by the age of 20 yrs. has not attained an associate's degree and hasn't been making any progress towards attaining such a degree, then they should automatically be involuntarily placed into the military for no less than 2 yrs. During this time of service to our country, they will also be in training for an associate's degree, as well.
Once a person obtains an associate's degree outside the military, they can then register to join a work crew. A crew that routinely works on a daily basis for either their county, state, or federal government, until they're able to find gainful employment via private employers. Until such time, they should receive some form of monetary compensation for governmental crew work.

Everyone regardless as to their level of income
should have equal access to Health-care

If we can make certain that these things are accomplished, along with the assurance of treating all Americans equally, then we should all feel much safer in our country wherever we venture and with whomever we chose to interact.

That's without guns and without any riots!

The irony of this post is astonishing. Mass shootings with rifles are also "corner-case" exceptions to the rule, yet you're fine making general laws over that. Riots are actually more common.

This lists around 50 riots (note some single entries reference multiple cities) since Ferguson in 2014:

If want to include the smaller "flash mobs" then there is definitely a reason to be prepared.

I used to eat at a restaurant a few doors down from the Kroger in the video below. While the language may seem harsh to some, it is appropriate conversation among the people in the video.

This gas station incident happened down the street from the video above just a few weeks later.

There was also a 3rd incident in that same area of town when a group of young men tried to pull people from their cars at a stop light.

That is up to the individual. Natural disasters and riots happen more than once a decade. In some areas home invasions are not uncommon.

I remember armed guys standing watch over their generators during an extended power outage in the dead of winter. They were not being paranoid, there were warnings to be on guard for thieves and looters. This in a quiet safe area. They were coming in from the city to steal generators and sell on the black market as stores were sold out and people were desperate. It doesn't take much for things to get weird.

There are many things that can cause the thin veneer of civility to fall and everything turn into chaos. While FEMA doesn't list a firearm for protection, they do give you a good list to start a prep kit. They recommend 3 days of supplies. What happens after that 3 days? https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-...-meals-anarchy

I live near the New Madrid fault line and if it decides to repeat the earthquake of 1811 then Memphis would be cut-off from the western half of the US at least in the short term. What about the east? Look at a road map and find a road that doesn't cross a smaller river or creek in the damage zone. There isn't one.

It would definitely be more than 3 days before food shipments become regular so I prepare for not only the lack of food but the hungry hordes of people looking for food.
