Many young people leading safe, comfortable lives in the West take up causes like the environment or gender equality. Fewer devote themselves to the plight of Kurds in Syria’s brutal civil war. Fewer still travel there to join the fighting, and those who do are usually men.
But Anna Campbell, a young woman from southern England, did all of that. Last week, as the Turkish military and its Syrian rebel allies hammered their way into Afrin, in northwestern Syria, Ms. Campbell died for her commitment — the eighth Briton and the first British woman to be killed fighting alongside Kurdish forces.
Foreign fighter involving herself in the internal affairs of a country without invitation from the government of the country. We in the US seem to not like the Russians interfering in our elections by even making posts on Facebook, so I doubt any other governments would like foreign fighters taking up arms.
Bit of a difference between individuals from other nations fighting alongside the Kurds against brutal repression and the Russian government working to undermine our elections.
There is a tradition of those from other nations joining in such underdog fights. Was just reading about the Eagle Squadrons during WWII -- Americans pilots slipped through Canada to join the RAF in the early days of WWII.
This said, I have a friend who said he wanted to go back there to kill ISIS. I still would do my darnest to stop him. It is not his war and I feel he should stay here with us.
All these terrorists can kill themselves or each other. i am not going to lose my friends over there. That is my honest feeling.
