Ideal for what environment? I wouldn't want one for close quarters indoors self defense. If they are at range outside, sure, why not. But what are the odds that you will be defending yourself at long range?
I have to wonder where people get these ideas.
First of all, from what I understand about that round is that it loses nearly all its energy on the first thing it hits. So it won't go through the first wall, then the second and take out a friendly in the next room.
Secondly, what are the odds? Well, I do carry a rifle whenever I travel and in Texas, there are a lot of open spaces. Sure, it is great on the highway but what are you facing if a jack knifed 18 Wheeler (or an off'd serial bomber) closes your section of the interstate and then in order to travel, you have to go to state highway and FMs?
Where do we get these ideas? Oh, we are probably the same kind of people who travel fully decked out in winter just in case someone, something forces us off the road.

Without going into details, practically all my professional instructors such as my CHL, say that the carry out should be at least one magazine in the pistol and two spares.
Shotgun is best for home defense where you don’t want to worry about overpenetrating drywall/windows.
REALLY? Geesh, you people know nothing about guns! Even with bird-shot a blast from a shotgun will go right through both sheets of drywall into the next room.
I don't own an AR 15. Probably never will, out of my price range. But I know people who use them for hunting and target shooting. I don't understand why anyone would blame a particular gun. Doesn't make sense.

Yep. Right now, I have a revolver for home defense. I have touched an AR-15 before, that is about it. I have no problems with it, why do people have this irrational fear of a particular gun is something I just don't understand.
What will suffice is whatever the law abiding, tax paying US citizen decides will suffice for him...not you or anyone else.
Just addressing the rationale for using an AR15 for Home defense.
