I appreciate your concerns for the 2nd amendment BUT, you do the rest of us a GREAT DISSERVICE when you lump the AR style rifles and the AK together as "sporting rifles".
Yes the AR style is BUT the AK certainty is NOT.
Why is the AK not a semiautomatic sporting rifle?
It functions exactly the same as any gas piston AR, it just uses a smaller cartridge (7.62x39 vs 7.62x51) than an AR style gas piston 7.62/.308. Basically, the AK occupies the space between a 5.56 NATO and 7.62 NATO (x51mm, that is) round. Little more punch than 5.56 NATO, but lighter, smaller and easier to carry lots of rounds than the 7.62x51 used in AR-10 series sporting rifles.

I will tell you why, it is because the poster that posted that nonsense and others have no clue about firearms. lol.

I don't mean to put words in the poster's mouth and I am curious of his answer as well.
But I am thinking maybe he was talking about the full-auto version. I assume those are NFA firearms.
Just out of curiosity, is it true that AK made in Russia are now banned? I am not so sure about it.
If you want full auto, you have to get a registered select fire lower (pre 1986) and that’s over 20 grand.
You can get a registered drop in auto sear for a standard lower, that’s also 20 grand.
You can get a lightning link for a stand lower. They are going for 15 grand and no select fire. Either way you are going to pay out the nose and fill out a lot of paperwork plus endure rigorous inspections.
Does that help you?
Might want to jot this down if that's what you want to do.
But how about settling for 'nearly full auto' for $500?

They are banned due to sanctions against Russia, not because the specifics of being an AK-47; all firearms from Russia I think are banned due to sanctions, not just AK-47's.
Anyway, most AK-47's or variant in the US are not from Russia, but are from China, Romania, or the US.

As are any AR-15 or AR-10 series/style rifles with selective fire (safety/semiauto/full auto). The semiautomatic sporting versions are what we are taking about here, and tons of companies make semiautomatic ONLY sporting versions of the AK-47 series/style rifle.

Well, under the NFA, where it's made is irrelevant really, since the "after 1986" thing is so absurdly researched, costed, tracked, and also because 32 other countries make some variant of the AK-47 with selective fire.
The ones made by US companies are all semiautomatic ONLY sporting versions.

This is true. In the early 90's I was able to buy Russian surplus SKS's very inexpensively. I forget the year arms, and ammunition sales from Russia were banned, but it has been a long time. Now the prices for Russian guns is through the roof, because they are limited in number here. It not because of the type of arm, but due to politics.
You are still able to buy AK-47, semi automatic look a likes from Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, and now they are also made in the U.S.
Yep, I have a Hornady Lock-N-Load AP. I'll send you a link via DM...
