I didn't even realize it, but that's because this harassment from the Iranian navy just seemed to stop when Trump took office.

Sometimes the only language some countries understand is fear and the threat of utter destruction if you mess with us.

Iran humiliated the US Navy under Obama

Quote:
Later that year Iranian ships conducted "unsafe and unprofessional," and often taunting maneuvers around US Navy ships in the Persian Gulf five times in about a month.

In September of that same year, Trump addressed Iran while on the campaign trail. "When they circle our beautiful destroyers with their little boats and they make gestures at our people that they shouldn't be allowed to make, they will be shot out of the water," Trump said.

Shortly after Trump's election, the incidents noticeably stopped, despite Trump's open hostility towards Iran, compared to Obama's attempts to appease them.

The US Navy "openly acknowledged there was a shift that happened roughly around the time we had our political transition," Jonathan Schanzer, vice president of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Business Insider. "There was a status quo and the status quo changed."

According to Schanzer, the Trump administration gave no official warning to Iran over the naval incidents, but instead, "the unpredictability of Trump has made Iran more reticent to test American red lines."

They just didn't have the bad luck to have a ship with mechanical difficulties drift into Iranian waters. It doesn't appear that China worries much about Trump in the South China Sea.

Countries will continue to play games with each other so stop giving Trump credit.

Iran is well aware that the days of Obama the pushover are over. Kushner has Israel & Saudi Arabia/Egypt and other Sunni Middle Eastern countries, ready to sit down and negotiate a Mideast peace plan. You know who's not invited to the table? Shia Iran. If you think the idea of the Israelis & the Sunni Muslims forming an alliance with the United States against them doesn't concern them immensely, then you're not too smart. The Obama Iran deal is going to be overturned as well, only a matter of time. Iran is well aware the times have changed.

Persian Gulf, Persian ships patrolling it.

Remember that Iran is nothing but the new name for Persia. Persia claimed the gulf for their waters 1,000 years ago and have been sailing it ever since.

Trump's bluster means nothing at all.

International waters....and we could have a sub there 24/7/365 if they get out of hand, and then they wouldn't be able to even operate in "their" gulf AND have to live under the fear of cruise missile attacks the entire time.

They don't want to wind up in that situation. So they backed off...which was smart of them.

International law regarding international waters still applies. Iran doesnt recognize it though, hasn't for decades. They claim the enterity of the strait of Hormutz as sovereign waters, which is one reason why many nations (not just the U.S.) have a presence there with warships.

Iran has shot up unarmed oil tankers before, and mined waters in internationally recognized areas.
