When John Turano showed up to a few major pro-Trump rallies last year in body armor and a Spartan helmet—brawling with Antifa protestors and confronting anyone who got in his way—he quickly became an icon of the alt-right "Patriot" movement.
But after Turano, a.k.a. Based Spartan, realized that some of the people he’d aligned himself with were neo-Nazis, homophobes, and racists, he turned against the movement—going from alt-right celebrity to pariah overnight.
VICE met up with Turano at his home in Los Angeles to hear why he joined the alt right in the first place, what it was like to rally with them, and why he decided to go his own way.

That guy has no clue about what actual leadership is. He's so caught up in fighting and toughness that he can't even see the difference between inspiration and wild-animal-style pecking orders.
Matthew Heimbach, another white nationalist also ran into some trouble lately. He was sleeping with his wife's step-father's wife and ended up getting arrested after beating up his wife (I know, it took me a moment to untangle too).
One of America’s highest-profile neo-Nazi parties is “no more” after a bizarre love triangle saw its leader locked up for assault.
The Traditionalist Worker Party gained national attention after its involvement at the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last August. Its leader, Matthew Heimbach was arrested Tuesday for allegedly assaulting his wife and his spokesman after Heimbach was caught cheating on his wife with the group's spokesman’s (who is also his wife's step-father) wife.

He's just feeding off the adrenaline. He doesn't care about leadership, ultimately he doesn't care about trump.
He had a rough past. Served some time. Got cleaned up for his kids. Being this "spartan" gives him a taste of what he gave up in a manner that he's judged won't land him back in jail.
He's just a knuckledragger who likely has employment issues due to his serving time and as such he has too much time on his hands.
