This is a major reason why I was against tearing down the confederate statues . . . I knew it wouldn't stop there (that, and I was also against whitewashing history).
This is how Chinese cultural revolution started. Taking down statue, burning books, etc.
This was predicted by many, including people on this forum; it starts with one thing, and it will spread to other things, eventually all presidents and leaders who do not pass the ever fluid current PC test, eventually you will see the Lincoln memorial and even the Washington Monument attacked. The goal is of course to erase the history of the US and effectively state from (insert date) it is a new country built on the ashes of the former, oh year, we need a new constitution also as the current one was made and supported by these horrible people in the past.
I can’t respond to that one without violating the TOS and probably getting banned.
Chicano3000X is the one who needs banning by trotting out this worthless crap that he/she/it believes. It totally insulting to those who have a scintilla of intellect.

They suffer from mental illness. We need to be kind to them and get them help. But they do not belong in positions of authority.

Which is why I won’t ever vote for even a moderate democrat again. I like Beto O’Rourke better than Ted Cruz, but I’m voting for Cruz because of this bs.
During the McKinley administration, the government took children from the California tribes and sold them into slavery, long after slavery was abolished. Indians weren't considered citizens, so back then, they didn't count to the white men from Washington.
The kids were sold in the same town square the statue stands in. It was erected in 1905, the same time as when the Confederate statuary began popping up all over the south, and the plaque on the monument commemorates "The Former Indian Troubles."
Some of those troubles exterminated tribes that had existed on the California coast ever since the last ice age. But 20 miles away from Arcata, there's a reservation where a tribal remnant still lives. Arcata is the closest town, so the Indians all go shopping and to school there, but they have hated the statue for 100 years, and never go into the town square where the Indian children were sold off.
All this sound like they are pretty good reasons to me. When is enough humiliation enough? For the tribe, tehy decided 100 years of it was enough.

Have a beer and get over it. The man was the President of the United States and accomplished great things, your mealy mouthed guilt-history lesson withstanding.

That is pretty awful, if true. Why can’t they put another plaque on the statue listing this to add context?
