Nothing is free. The people that use Facebook are not customers. They are data suppliers. Essentially they are a resources, and asset. Often the data is very, very personal, and potentially dangerous to the very people that unknowingly provide it.

His mistake was trusting the pro-right Cambridge Analytica. Seems he owes the entire world an apology, as he was partially complicit in getting Trump Elected. Is there a penalty for "Treason by proxy"?
