I'm sorry, but don't buy it, not when we have so many American boys and girls that need educations and have managed to stay out of prison....to follow laws....
What this is doing is rewarding bad behavior before our good students....
I'm in favor of rehabilitation, but not when our country has people who should come first, and then take it to the prisons....
And NJ had this in effect, but they want to now add more.....
I'm sorry, but we have way to many kids who are wanting to go to college...and can't afford it....give them the breaks and the money and when that's done, then give it to prison inmates.
Oh my goodness. You really haven't thought this through, have you?
why not take that same money and rehabilitate and educate the homeless First....
We are constantly giving money away and helping other countries....
the way to help others, is to first, get your own house in order, and then branch out slowly to help your own and others at home....
We always do it backwards...always....
once they get in Prison, they're pretty much gone, depending on the crime....a life of crime is all they've known, you rehabilitate young kids in school, teach them morals, how to be good parents, HOW TO USE BIRTH CONTROL, GIVE THEM HOPE AND OPPORTUNITES, you'll have less people ending up in prison. Teach them what to look for in a lifetime mate, how to parent, how to stay away from the gang mentality....that working for what you want is the reward, to not depend on others to carry them...
That would be a start....

You clearly don't.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.
as a Christian, I believe in following the laws....and I believe in redemption, however, you don't give to people who have hurt others, by breaking the law, and there is always someone who suffers from a crime....
and leave your homeless and productive kids dangle, rehabilitate them first, then move to the prisons....if you train kids from the get go, you wouldn't have so many people in prison....

You are fine to help someone out with getting a degree or hiring them to work for you, but robbing peter to pay for pauls education doesnt sound very christian to me.
I believe this whole move is to get more people out of prisons and put them back on the street, b/c our prisons are so full right now....and they don't want to build more prisons....

I guess the concept of noblesse oblige has been completely lost in modern American society.
So you enjoy paying for food and healthcare of criminals? Weird.
What does that have to do with free college? Non-criminals don't even get free college. Giving felons free college would be monetarily rewarding felonies.
Moreover, college education is both over-subscribed, even for non-felons, and self-supporting salaries aren't exactly guaranteed for undergraduates. I'd imagine that, even ignoring the past criminality, the rate of job success will be even lower for felons due to the nature of their flawed habits and values.
In short, this seems more like a publicity stunt for votes than anything with a realistic outcome expectation. My prediction is that it'll never pass.

when you go to prison, you loose your rights because you chose to do something awful to someone else, and you made them suffer....you chose to separate yourself from society...and go against the law abiding citizens...prisoners have been rewarded time after time over the years....and it's wrong, especially when we've got law abiding citizens living in the streets. Before long this entire country is going to be looking like California's homeless sections.
