Lets put it another way, are you scared of 20,000 nuclear weapons being unleashed on the population of Earth thereby eliminating the human species? it certainly gives me pause for concern.

I hope we are not that insane, but yes, the possibility is scary.

Putin has a lot more to lose than most ordinary people, he even has his own palace type structure on the Black Sea and fabulous wealth, which the US Government estimate to be between $50 Billion and $300 Billion.
The idea of Trump and Putin having to live the of their days in fall out shelters in a world destroyed by their own making would at least bring a smile to my face as I burned in a nuclear blast. Putin can be assured that the doctrine of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) is still very much alive and well, and that Russia would be destroyed in any nuclear exchange,
In terms of Russia it has a population of 145 million, is 13th in the world in relation to it's ecomony and it spends $70 Billion a year on Defence.
Compare this with the US which is the largest Economy in the world, spends ten times as much on Defence at $700 Billion, whilst NATO and the rest of Europe will bring this figure up to nearly $1 Trillion, which is the vast majority of real defence spending in the world.
The Russians like to see themselves as important on the world stage which is what all this posturing and nonsense is about, along with their continual pathetic lies and disinformation.
If Syria is attacked, it will be targets such as chemical warfare storage, airfied runways, radar and communications and there will be not boots on the ground.
No, there will be no war with Russia. Both Russians and us Americans know the consequences of a full scale war between our countries. Even if the war is conventional neither nation has the ability to fully defeat the other on its home turf. A limited conflict in a place like Syria would also be destructive and terrible, although the US would have the advantage with its more powerful navy and air force. Still tens of thousands would be killed and neither nation would benefit from that. The US Russian relationship is more of a game of chess, we move our pieces and they move theirs. Posturing and the use of proxies is the way of the Russian American conflict, direct combat between the two powers is unlikely to be seen.
As a Veteran of the US Military...yes I fear for the world including everyone in Russia as well as the USA, Europe, Asia, Africa...New Zealand might be safe for awhile.
My Father was an officer for the US Army in WWII and had this advice for me...don't ever get into a war with Russia.
