The NW suburbs of Chicago has some independent family-owned grocery stores. Caputo's, Garden Fresh, Fresh Farms and a lot of Italian deli's, Polish deli's, Asian stores, Mexican stores, etc. We still have butcher stores, too.
It's not like it once was with independent grocers /butchers all over the place, but there are plenty of little stores in my area.
Have to butt in here, but... Harczak's Sausage Company on Higgins? I used to send sausage care packages to family members far and wide when I lived there.
My opinion, Dollar General has found a way to compete with Walmart by making their stores easier to get to than a Walmart. Why drive 15 miles to get to a Walmart for a gal. of milk when you can get to a Dollar General in one mile. It seems to be working.
Walmart tried to compete with Dollar General when they built the Walmart Express stores a few years ago in rural areas. Big mistake. The Express stores lasted only 4 years and the buildings were sold to Dollar General.

Those dollar stores will shave years off of your life trying to manage them. It’s not worth it.
Naw. You ain't making 38,000 at Wendy's on full time hours . That's almost 20 dollars an hour.
Honestly, if you have worked in retail for a while, I would think a DG would be simple ( easier to manage )
My correct retail job clocks about 200 visiters an hour. I have never been in a DG that had more than 10 people in it at once ( save hurricane season right before a storm)

I haven't been there in a long time. I primarily go to Minelli Brothers in Niles, Gene's Sausage on Belmont Avenue in Chicago, and Dorfler Meats in Buffalo Grove.
But Thanksgiving turkey comes from Harrison's Poultry Farm in Glenview.

I’ve been to more than a few. Only for a quick stop because they tend to have some really lowlife customers. Plus their prices aren’t nearly as good as advertised.
Maybe the ones where you live are. Not in Texas though. Granted we don't judge people based on where they shop like your ilk does. "Let them eat cake" right?
