Teachers have great benefits here in the U.S. They don't work year round. They get health insurance. And they get lifetime pensions that are worth many, many times what they contribute to such.
In many states, teacher pay and benefits are abysmal! Here in NC, ranked 39th in education and 46th in teacher pay, the starting salary is $30,700 for the poorer counties. That's insulting for a college graduate! They also pay what I consider a high amount for their measly health benefits as well. Their pensions aren't that great either, based off of their low salaries.
You know North Carolina is cheap, when Texas can come in to recruit STEM teachers by offering a $15,000 signing bonus and those teachers flee NC, like passengers on the Titanic!

Oh, please. NC is even worse! They pay more on average than AZ.
Given such, explain WHY U.S. students are at the BOTTOM of OECD comparisons.
Well, they're not in Westchester County, NY! Those students do as well as Finland and Korea. But I suspect you'd complain about the $126,000 high school math teacher salary (with a M.S. and 20 yrs experience) and other county towns competing for them by offering $135,000! It may not be true in all cases, but you kinda get what you pay for. You don't shop for a Mercedes with "used Yugo" money!

That's just it... U.S. taxpayers DON'T get what they pay for. Our teachers are overpaid, and our students are ranked at the bottom. Source: OECD.
And even our adults in the workforce are ranked at the bottom, with millennials being the least capable generation yet. Source: OECD.

The taxpayers DO get what they pay for, depending on where you live and how much you're prepared to pay! Not ALL of our students are ranked at the bottom! Examine the data a little closer! If you pay cheap, you get cheap! That's capitalism for you. Do you think the CEOs of the Fortune 500 are overpaid?
