All good except for the people part. You can’t have open borders and a welfare state.

in theory, the optimal system for global economic growth is one where all countries have free trade and free movement of people. But that's generally not considered to be in any individual nation's national self-interest, so it of course is not how the world works.

However the system we've settled on is also problematic; free trade and free movement of capital, without free movement of people, also creates economic problems and imbalances. Sort of like what we see with the US and China.

it's a quandary that is not easy to resolve. As you say, a nation can't have open borders and a welfare state; but it also doesn't suit to have a world where everyone is "caged", so to speak, and unable to migrate to a place where their labor is more-highly-valued.

Interesting survey results.......
hmm,

European immigrants and American immigrants are not the same. Migration from EU, and controlled migration from non-EU countries for job seekers and university students is clearly beneficial to the Europeans

But when it comes to refugees and uncontrolled immigration from certain part of the world, i think Opinions are split; German society is pretty polarized on this issue at least.

This thread should definitely be in the Europe forum instead of here.

Remain welcome to immigrants from the third world and war zones, good luck being from the US and immigrating over there without jumping through a thousand hoops, and still get denied.

Yeah, if you want to immigrate to a EU country, the US is probably one of the tougher countries to be from.

You need a job there to immigrate, and employers are legally required to try to hire their own country's citizens first, then EU citizens, and only then consider non-EU citizens.

The US is not a EU country, it's not a member of the Commonwealth (so no easier immigration stream to the UK that Commonwealth citizens enjoy), and Americans wouldn't be considered refugees.

So as far as immigration to Europe goes, Americans are just about last in line.

Well, we welcome over 1 million legal immigrants a year in keeping with our ability to provide them with jobs and resources. What could be better than that? We also have a lot of family chain migration. I'd say we are doing our part in spite of the claims by liberals and ethnocentrics of xenophobia. Nothing xenophobic with making sure they will be contributors to our society, are not a threat to us and will assimilate into mainstream. We shouldn't be bringing immigrants here just to make the rich, richer by them working for less than Americans either.

Says a person looking down his nose from a country that has a far worse self-inflicted problem.

Europeans who think they are helping are deluded. They are not helping themselves, they are not helping the people of the countries these immigrants come from either.

Being a relief valve for these unstable areas only prolongs the situation there. And it deprives those populations of the most able members of their society, leaving them in even worse shape than before the emigration.
