This guy used to be the city councilman in my neighborhood and was terrible . But hopefully this story isn’t true as it would be a very sick thing to do . Drug and molest an underage girl.

Rep. Tony Cardenas, a San Fernando Valley Democrat, confirmed Thursday that he is the unidentified elected official in a lawsuit filed last week in Los Angeles alleging sexual molestation of a teenage girl in 2007, but he vehemently denied the allegations.

The encounter is alleged to have occurred more than a decade ago when Cardenas, an avid golfer and advocate for a youth golf program, was a Los Angeles city councilman. The suit claims that the elected official gave the girl water with a "peculiar taste" on a Los Angeles golf course and then molested her later in a car.

Cardenas, one of the highest-ranking Latino members of Congress, leads the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' Bold PAC, which works to elect Latinos nationwide.

The suit states that the young woman came forward with the allegations because of the #MeToo movement that followed numerous disclosures of sexual harassment by high-profile business leaders and politicians. Now married, the woman wants "to be a strong role model" for her daughter, according to the suit.

Its interesting that the L.A Times article doesn’t include as much detail as the Daily News one.. specially that the accuser was 16 at the time .

It doesnt sound to me that she is really getting that 'strong role model' thing across very well to her kids, if she waits until its a popular time to come forward about events in the past! She should do it at a time its not so popular if she wanted to instill good values.

OH.....you are showing, by your ignorant post, how much you DON'T get effects of sexual assault, nor do you understand there could have been reasons years ago not to report such crimes.

It's not POPULAR now, just finally time when most Americans...well, not you....get the entire me too issues.

The collective silence has been broken.

California politicians consider themselves above the law because so many have gotten away with so much for so long. Tide is turning. Vote John Cox for governor!

Cárdenas also apparently had power over her father’s job . Allegedly he mentioned “you know where your father works” so basically threatening her that if she said something her father would lose his job .

Especially at a young age like that it’s easy to see she would be intimidated and fearful to say something .

Victim shaming? Oh, no. Who would do that?

Why not just allow the court decide who is to blame here?

After all, courage sometimes needs time to build, and courage may be easier to gather up at a time when the person who needs it doesn't feel as all alone and helpless as before. Imparting good values to your children doesn't have time limits.
