I might agree with you if it were just China. Problem is Trump's policies are not just aimed at China, but our allies as well.

tariffs had little impact on the great depression if any. Please read your history.
Buying stocks on margin was the main culprit.

You pretty much summed it all up there ^^^^. Whenever I hear some Trumpee say "Well, he must be smart, he is rich", it makes me understand a little more how he duped so many people. First off, IS he REALLY rich ? None of us have examined his financials, nor are most of us qualified to do it if we could.

Secondly, his business record is not exactly stellar. Failed casinos, bankruptcies , failed university, more bankruptcies, and tons of people not paid for the work they did for him. If that is "successful", I would hate to see a failure.

This trade war BS is going to bite us in the behind big time. Someone in that entire WH crew has to get a leash on him and make him sit down with people who KNOW world economics and teach him this ain't like buying a building in the Bronx.

I'd bet there are a thousand similar stories over the last 30 years.
Is your argument that American consumers should forcibly be made poorer so american glass businesses can profit more and be protected from competition?

so a little actual information worth discussing....

I agree with those that point to Smoot Hawley and identify it as very bad policy that exacerbated the great depression.

Protectionism for protectionism's sake is bad mojo.

So the question one has to ask is, is this thing that Trump has been doing actual protectionism for protectionism sake?

Smoot Hawley placed tariffs on huge numbers of items being imported. It was done to protect companies from outsiders. There was no intent to attach those tariffs the behavior of import/export partners.

President Trump's tariff plan has always been contingent upon the actions of trading partners. We have imbalances with nations who have placed barriers to American exports. Those nations are being targeted by Mr. Trump and it seems its largely about renegotiating how they approach our exports.

These things aren't the same thing. I am not all in with Mr. Trump on his approach. I am kind of sitting in the middle patiently waiting to see how the ball bounces. But I do see the difference between Smoot Hawley and Mr. Trumps approach.

The interesting thing for me is seeing these liberals here all atwitter over Trumps approach when THIS BOARD was talking "Fair Trade back in waning days of the GWBush presidency. Those conversations were pretty close to what Mr. Trump is currently doing. Back then my liberal friends were hopeful that a democrat president would take a Fair Trade approach in contrast to the Free Trade approach of the Bush/Clinton/Bush years.

You know, I might have been willing to look at the article you cite. I might have been willing to examine the policies and be critical towards this new approach.

However, the ranting and raving of your last paragraph killed any chance of that happening.

so very true. in addition the threatened tariffs are there to push countries to renegotiate their trade deals with the US, not just to prevent dumping of products on our markets.

if you trump haters were to actually investigate what china has been doing for years to this country, things like manipulating our currency using our own markets against us, stealing our intellectual property, putting up large trade barriers for product going to china, and dumping their junk here, among the many other things they are doing, then perhaps you would realize that trump is doing the right thing, and there will be some pain as a result, but we will be better off in the long run.

but since you trump haters are looking through your hate fill glasses, you wont see these things, and you will continue your hatred of trump regardless of what he does.

It did hurt but wasn't the major reason. It was just progressivism by the economic failure FDR to manipulate the economy that extended the Great Depression and he favored his cronies. Crony capitalism fails again.

All this because trump has just done it with steel?? The article isn't very in depth.

Tariffs bad. Agreed.
