Most of both go toward policy initiatives, specifically around healthcare access. My state and national representatives know me by name from both volunteering on their campaigns and meeting with them about legislation impacting those with long-term health concerns, particularly young adults with cancer.
I've spent weekends hitting the pavement and knocking on doors since I was in high school. Helped me significantly with my social anxiety and, particularly in college, got me to talk to lot of people who I never would have had the opportunity to meet and learn their stories otherwise.

You're going to have a difficult time when you're in the position of defending your continued financial support to someone who at this rate will go down as the president with the worst guilty record in history. At least if it was a one-time donation, you could have invented some excuse. But now you'll be stuck having to double down, rationalize, and keep on going.
Yes, I have contributed to favored candidates. Unlike you, though, I don't contribute to stingy rich candidates who lie about their income. I've contributed to candidates who actually need the money.
