Alaska may have a high per capita GDP, but that is largely a function of how few people live there. On an absolute basis, Alaska's economy contributes less than one half of one percent of the countries GDP. Hardly a shocker why it does not figure more into national news.

Too much favoritism is shown to office drone jobs in finance and technology. We should salute the efficiency and production of the great states of North Dakota and Alaska, but they never get any coverage!

Wyoming is also #7

Oil, natural gas, coal. It's the luck of geography. Whoop-dee-do! I live in a state with lots of sun and run my house on solar energy. Do I get a gold star, too?

Yes very innovative using natural resources and claiming it’s some type of revelation.

Yeah, they have much quality of living for the middle-class, working-class and even entry-level workers as opposed to coastal states.

With oil at $70 a barrel, states like North Dakota, Wyoming, Alaska will just get wealthier and wealthier. Oklahoma has been doing really good economically.

Alaska and North Dakota not only have very high GDP per-capita but they have rock-bottom taxes.

For example, North Dakota has a 2.04% income tax on the $55,000th dollar of taxable income compared to 10.2% in California. Alaska has no state income tax.

Both have rock-bottom property taxes also. $1,400 in property tax on a random 2,100 square foot residence I looked up in Bismarck.

Bismarck, ND has a sales tax rate of 6.5% compared to 10.25% in Long Beach, CA

Per capita GDP of Qatar is $120k. I wouldn't consider it an economic model to look up to.

Yea... but you would have to live in Alaska.

Its cold as **** and there is no sun for months at a time, and then there is ONLY sun for months at a time. No thanks.

There is more to life than money and more to the desirability of an area to live in than GDP (which on an individual level, is basically completely irrelevant).

I mean, if you think its a good idea by all means move out there and get you a slice of that sweet GDP pie. How does that work again? Is there like an office you go to and request some forms to fill out to claim your share?
