From what I've read about it, it was either to cover up the Israeli invasion of Syria, to cover up Israeli war crimes against Egypt, to bring the U.S. into the Six-Day War by blaming its sinking on Egypt, or all three.

Considering Israel's military has been funded via your stolen income for decades, has ICBMs, and has many Israeli citizens serving in the U.S. government, I'd say they are pretty much untouchable. AIPAC controls the U.S. government.
And right in the middle of the six-day war with Jordan, Egypt and Syria, no less. Bomb their best ally on purpose. Sure...
From what I've read they were trying to pull another Gulf of Tonkin and were trying to get us to blame Egypt so we'd get pulled into the war.
Hell, pretty much every war this country has fought for the last 30 or so years is for Israel. 6,000 Americans dead, trillions and trillions of dollars wasted.
