Where I work, our bathrooms are available for anyone who walks in the door. We have a homeless guy who stands outside all day long, and he occasionally comes in and uses it........no problem. Homeless people are just like you and me, except life has not been as good to them.
I don't know how Starbucks is so popular though. Their drinks, even a simple hot cocoa that I asked them to not add any sweetener to, are so unbearably sweet that I physically cannot drink them.
It really is insane how much sugar Starbucks puts in their drinks. To put it into perspective, the WHO says that a normal adult should limit their sugar intake to 25 grams per day... a single hot chocolate from Starbucks has a whopping 43 grams. That's almost double your daily value in one drink. On top of that, many people also buy things like scones, muffins, cookies, etc. to have with their drinks, which are also all full of sugar. It's no wonder diabetes is so common among adults.
You have to ask them to put less pumps of chocolate in one of those.
It's really easy to get a cocoa from there that's not too sweet if you know what they use to make it.
It's made with chocolate and with vanilla syrup.
Soo.... you need less of everything, not just what the barista probably thought.... which was not to add any sweetener, which they likely think of as simple syrup, and there is none of that in a hot chocolate.
Their cider, for example, has apple juice, cinnamon dolce syrup, AND a caramel drizzle. I have to order it with one pump of syrup in a grande (which I think is supposed to have SIX OF THOSE) and light on the caramel drizzle or I cannot drink it.
It's all in how you order. Most coffee drinks I order with half the usual pumps of syrup and no whip. I don't do whip.
Good god.
Deathly sweet should not be the default for any of their drinks.
The perception is that homeless people are less clean.
I've been in the women's restrooms of some fancy smancy restaurants -- let me tell you -- some women are pigs.....oh yeah -- they paint up good. Spackle that foundation on, rouge those cheeks and give some good lipstick - but dang it don't they turn in to some two bit piece of trash the way they treat the restrooms.
I hope Starbucks has the restrooms cleaned and disinfected every half hour. Just based on the sheer volume of people using the facilities. And I would hate to think about the germs the employees are subject to and then are making your drink. Ew.

Doubt they’ll clean them every 30 mins .

Starbucks' (SBUX) changes to its bathroom policy appear to be impacting foot traffic for the coffee giant, despite sales that have outpaced expectations, according to recent data.
Since opening its bathroom doors to the public in the wake of a controversial incident in Philadelphia, the coffee giant has seen a 6.8% drop in store attendance per month relative to other coffee shops nearby, according to the findings of a joint study from the University of Texas at Dallas and Boston College.
