This is not a new strategy:

Quote:
...the ad campaign is reminiscent of tactics employed during the Soviet era. ...the KGB tried to disrupt the LA Olympics by faking propaganda from the KKK threatening black athletes.

"Soviet news media always played up U.S. racism, exaggerating the levels of hatred even beyond the horrific levels of the reality in the 1950s," writes USC professor Nick Cull. "It was one reason Eisenhower decided to move on civil rights."
Our current administration campaigned on and is moving in a divisive direction, building a wall, calling Mexicans rapists, funding ads that associate Native Americans with drug use and crime, referring to a white nationalist terror attack as "good people on both sides". Trump was a vocal supporter of the birther movement, consistently attempting to discredit the first black president.

The Kremlin are not our friends, neither are the racists who consume and regurgitate their propaganda.

Yet not a word in your post about the race card....

While some ads focused on topics as business promotion, they consistently promoted ads designed to inflame race-related tensions. Some dealt with race directly; others dealt with issues fraught with racial and religious baggage such as ads focused on protests over policing, the debate over a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico and relationships with the Muslim community.

So the Russian trolls calculated that those who were obsesssed with such issues were also the most easily manipulated, even with false claims. What's more, whipping up such issues was most likely, in their minds, to produce what they really wanted - real chaos, such as that created by riots.

Obama administration was great at sowing racial discord and division. Long before Trump was even thinking of running. Actually that's probably one reason Trump decided to run, because he wanted it to stop

Is Spike Lee proud of himself? Is the "Rev." Al Sharpton? How about Jesse Jackson? Or Maxine Waters? Or most certainly Obama? Black Lives Matter, too. All of the long lists of race hustlers who have reaped points and profited handsomely from whipping up charges of racism for their own political gain,

And that would be the Loony Left aka Progressives. They riot at the drop of a hat. I guess they are bored living in Mom's basement.

Typical, the op tries to spin it

- About 1,950 — made express references to race.
- At least 25% of the ads centered on issues involving crime and policing, often with a racial connotation.
- Only about 100 of the ads overtly mentioned support for Donald Trump or opposition to Hillary Clinton.

if someone other than "the Russians" had done this - isn't it considered freedom of speech? certainly other groups have posted ads that invoke emotion or touch on a subject they want to advance one way or the other.

Yep, I've been saying since the left freaked out that they were making Putin a very happy man. They didn't have the common sense to know that chaos in our democracy is exactly what Putin and Russians want. Duh!

Democrats, Liberals, and Progressives were played by the Russians
