I don't trust Kim anymore than the majority on the forum does. However I do see some differences from the last time he did not keep his word.
For one Kims associates are rightly concerned and are not anxious to be drug into a war to defend his country. He counts heavily on China and others if his hand is called.

I do believe Kim and others are a bit fearful of the American President. They should be. It is high time Kim does something constructive for his people. Perhaps Kim has received the message. As our President has said, we will see.

North Korea says it may blow off Trump meeting, and insist US won't make it give up nukes CNBC

North Korea threatens to cancel Trump-Kim summit over US push for "unilateral" denuclearization Japan Times

North Korea threatens to pull out of Trump-Kim summit over denuclearization demands POLITICO

From Japan Times:

Quote:
If the Trump administration “is trying to drive us into a corner to force our unilateral nuclear abandonment, we will no longer be interested in such dialogue and cannot but reconsider our proceeding to the DPRK-U.S. summit,” First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said in the statement. DPRK is the acronym for the North’s formal name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
Kim Kye Gwan, a top diplomat involved in past nuclear talks with the U.S., said the future prospects for the Kim-Trump summit, as well as improvements in overall bilateral ties, would “be crystal clear” if Washington continued to speak of a “Libya-style” denuclearization for the North.
and:

Quote:
“In a way, the North is forcing Trump to show his inclination to support Bolton or perhaps a less demanding form of ‘denuclearization’ that simply reduces the threat to the U.S.,” Schoff said. “Trump could go either way — because he seems to want a deal — so we’ll learn something from his reaction.”
Schoff said that “if he … distances his view from Bolton, then (Prime Minister Shinzo) Abe and Japan will be disappointed, because it will seem more likely that Trump is willing to let Japan’s needs fade to the background in favor of his own political gain.”
On Wednesday, Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Toshihide Ando pledged that Tokyo will keep a close eye on actions and announcements by Pyongyang, while adding that the government would continue to work closely with the U.S. toward a successful Kim-Trump summit.
“Through the U.S.-North Korea summit, we hope to see progress in denuclearization, the abandonment of missiles, and most importantly, the abductee issue,” Ando said.

The US canceled the invasion exercises under pressure from the South Korean government.

There wouldn't be any talks or summits without Moon. Trump and the hawks are trying to take credit for their approach where past agreements have always been preceded by concessions by both sides. Their actions caused the South to panic and try to arrange a meeting between the two sides to stave off a war. Asians are used to the North making bellicose statements, but they're not used to the Americans making very careless statements about waging war and saturation bombing.

why the summit is going off the rails

Not likely. Brennan's the one who was duped.

Once you know, you don't need to test. He could easily say he is going to "close test sites" because he no longer needs them.
NK has only conducted a handful of tests, of which several were failures. Single tests of a stated capability is not enough to prove those weapons designs work. At best, the successful tests have created uncertainty that they would fail.

Wasn't there more than one test. And if there weren't enough tests, etc. why did the USA freak out over the tests?

I do think Trump is being played by the Chinese and the North Koreans -- and South Korea and Japan will continue to stroke his ego telling him how wonderful he is. They need him to do some heavy lifting for them.
