One of our #1 enemies who killed many coalition forces and drove them out - is now the winner of the election today. He intends to establish a true Fundie state.
Man, that 5 Trillion could definitely have been used to MAGA. Instead, it was used to remove secular government and install Fundies. Same will happen in Afghanistan..and many even Syria if we don't butt out quickly.
"al-Sadr famously said "Saddam was the little serpent, but America is the big serpent.""
"Sadr's Mahdi Army took over several points and attacked coalition soldiers, killing dozens of foreign soldiers"
"his militia ambushed any and every convoy trying to get in or out of Baghdad International Airport, known to the soldiers as BIAP. This led to the worst convoy ambush of the war, the ambush of the 724th Transportation Company"
A couple of days ago they said in the news that the guy who throw his shoe (a huge insult in Muslim culture) at Bush during a press conference is running for a seat in Iraq's parliament And he seems to be pretty popular...
Most Iraqis were against the US occupation - we overstayed our welcome.
"He intends to establish a true Fundie state."
Your link, as do others, says otherwise and calls him a secularist (a person who advocates separation of the state from religious institutions)

While al-Sadr is not standing as a candidate in Saturday's national elections and is not officially a political leader, he has thrown his weight behind the Revolutionaries for Reform Alliance. That six-party coalition includes his supporters as well as Iraq's Communist Party. Running on an anti-corruption platform, the alliance includes Sunnis and Shiites, Islamist and secular Iraqis.

Mr Sadr himself rebranded as a secular nationalist, campaigning against corruption and for reform, a message which seemed to resonate with Iraqis tired of entrenched sectarianism and graft.
Shia, how did I guess? Iran's mullahs must be laughing their rearsides off. The US obligingly obliterated their worst enemy and installed a government that is aligned with Iran's religious leaders.

Rebranded? Eh?
He's a muslim cleric.
"In response to Israeli attacks on Gaza, al-Sadr called for reprisals against US troops in Iraq: "I call upon the honest Iraqi resistance to carry out revenge operations against the great accomplice of the Zionist enemy."
"In 2015 he entered into an alliance with the Iraqi Communist Party and other secular groups"
Yep, Secular.....Commie Secular.
I think the point is clear. We lost many lives and exposed millions of our people to horrible things - and spent trillions....and do you really think we have accomplished something?

Occupying Iraq for so long was a mistake, doubling down on failure, no way we were ever going to subjugate it or remake it in America's image. It was obvious that taking out (Sunni) Hussein would lead to the majority Shiite population taking over.
