FYI, drowning is a very common method of killing varmints in traps. Farmers do it all the time.
I was raised in the middle of farm country, and so was my wife, and I have never heard of this as being not only common, but done at all. They simply shoot them, trap and release, and some idiots use poison bait.
Why is there even a question? The teacher should be fired. There is no justifiable reason for his actions. The sad truth is that he will probably just be "suspended with pay" for a while and then reinstated. I've seen this many times.

The only way to kill a skunk without it spraying is to drown it. That's why trappers make drown sets. Same for mink and coons, beavers anything that might chew it's foot off in short order.

I doubt he'll keep his job. There's too much outrage by the community and parents. The school superintendent is already recommending he be fired. She sounds just as outraged as the parents and rightly so.
I don't know of anywhere it is illegal to use the water bucket method to deal with chipmunk infestations. Chipmunks can ruin a house foundation. It is more humane than trap and release which results in slow death.

I think regardless, he chose to drown 2 raccoons and a possum and make a spectacle of it including participation by the kids in his class. This wasn't about chipmunks ruining a foundation.

It's sad that our society has degraded to this level.
Nobody has yet to explain why what he did was wrong, how is that different from what we do in our daily life, and why raccoon's lives matter but not cockroaches or mosquitoes'.

When a critter is caught in a box trap, you could shoot it and tear up your trap. Or you could throw it in the stock tank and the rest takes care of itself. Farmers don't give a **** about varmints... which approach do you reckon they take?
