Hey Corey, I just watched New Jack City and read the Bell Curve. I now understand "other folks" as well. Right?
This is how his method works, no?
Yeah. Yeah, as a matter of fact it does. For people who are smart enough to understand what they're reading, anyway. You have no idea what you're missing out on in life.

There is no shortage of people that hate Cory Booker yet haven’t even read the book.
Why do I need to read the book to dislike him? I stated why I disliked him.
I wasn’t speaking to you, it was people like the op and the other trolls that have not even read the book and are not from WV. They just do not like Booker, the book is irrelevant.

Being from WV has nothing to do with my dislike of him. I do not like him. He is everything that is wrong with the (D) party.
If Booker read Hillbilly Elegy... he didn't learn much about rural people. Most of Vance's youth was spent in Middletown, OH, which is a medium sized town in between Cincinatti and Dayton, about 40 minutes to either. It's on I-75. It's not rural.
I was quite unimpressed with Hillbilly Elegy, and couldn't figure out what the hype was all about. JD's life didn't even sound that bad. The main bad part was the addict mother. Vance had a poor white version of a tiger grandma - she saw to it he stayed in school and generally encouraged him. While not rich... she had a little money; it sounded like through the grandma especially, he was on the borderline of lower middle class growing up, not chronically poor. Mom was a nurse & while her addiction kept her from steady jobs, she wasn't destitute.
The book had a good cover and great timing for release. It wasn't that profound though. Hillbillies need to stay in school, avoid drugs, don't overdo alcohol, don't have a revolving door of husbands/wives. Wow, really profound advice.

I don't understand why attempting to educate yourself about people, places, and ideas outside of one's little corner of the world is so open to criticism in this thread. Senator Booker is doing what educated people throughout time have done to expand their horizons.
Wow, I'm going to check it out. It sounds like a great read!
(OP, I'm not bashing. )
Seems a lot of people are reading it right now. I wanted to reread the book and was temporarily unable to find my copy. When I looked it up in our county library system, all 55(!) copies were checked out and there was a long waiting list. Happily, I found my book yesterday. It's just as compelling as it was when I read it the first time.
