I live in a very poor area too. Ninety percent of our students in the district are below the poverty line. I see nice cars too. They belong to the local politicians, teachers, and few upper middle class who live mostly outside of the city though there are a few pockets of upper-middle-class neighborhoods here.

A pack of cigarettes costs about 10 bucks where I live. Monthly rent costs about $1750.

Do you see how false equivocation tends to rule this discussion?

How may are paying OVER $100 a MONTH on smart phones and TV service?
That is normal. Even poorer people had phones and tv before cell phones and cable. You need cable or internet to get any service now.

In most areas, rents are based on 'market value'. As soon as a new complex is up and running and charging high rents, the rest of the apartments in the area increase their rents as well - even though those units are rundown and have no upgrades.

And WHO gave YOU thre AUTHORITY to declare what "the working class" means?

"work·ing classˈwərkiNG ˈˌklas/
noun
noun: working class; plural noun: working classes
1.
the social group consisting of people who are employed for wages, especially in manual or industrial work."

MOST middle class people are part of the "working class. and they OWN THEIR OWN HOUSES.

I would guess at least 60% or higher of the work force in America is part of the "working class".

If the workers don't think it's fair, why don't they refuse the wage and demand a higher pay?

They should certainly organize and demand more pay no argument from me.

As long as they don't force people to join their union as a condition to work or force the company to only work with the union members, I have no issue with any voluntary organization.

If they are so "ignorant," as you claim , how on earth have they avoided all the poverty traps? Which include: No/low-level work skills, low educational level, bearing children they cannot afford to financially support, smoking and/or drinking which eats up household income with nothing to show for the expenditures, etc.?

ISPs are forced to offer reduced price services to poor.
