Hannity left the Republican Party and changed registration to independent. So he's not in a very good position to speak for the Republican Party. But for all we know Republicans back most of Hannity's viewpoints.

Hannity calls for state monitoring of students' social media accounts

Whoa!!

'Mr. Republican' is arguing for a Big Brother intrusion into people's media accounts?

'Mr. Freedom' wants the state to snoop on people? It can't be ... there must be some mistake.

The world is turning upside down ...

once gain social media is not exactly private communication here, its out there in the public domain so that ANYONE can read what these people are posting. if you dont want your thoughts read, then dont post them up on a PUBLIC website.

and also note that hannity isnt talking about tapping their phones without a warrant, reading their emails, or any other private communications, only the public communications.

Hannity needs to shut the F up! What we need a child psychiatrist in every school that can deal with troubled kids before they get to a point where they want to hurt themselves and/or others. She/he could even do after school workshops for kids on how to deal with issues them face in their lives.

that is all well and good, but what happens when these troubled children dont want to go to the school psychiatrist? what then, make them go? you might push them further down the path of becoming a school shooter.

Lots of things MIGHT not work, like limiting the doors going into the schools could make some trouble kid set fire to the door and the kids inside have no way to get out. Holding parents responsible to lock up their guns MIGHT not work if the kids figure out where the keys are hidden. So I guess we shouldn't do ANYTHING at all because nothing is 100% going to work 100% of the time.

I find it really telling that the 2nd amendment defenders on this site are not as willing to defend the first amendment.

That might be because the 1st Amendment is designed to protect political speech from retribution by the government. It can be argued that school systems don't meet that criterion.

Social media law is evolving and is going to become even more difficult before it gets easier.

I don't know if you bothered to read any of the links that I, and a couple others, posted. Monitoring social media by schools isn't new, it's been going on for several years. That includes the monitoring of both students and staff.

Pearson Education monitors the social media of both students and teachers to ensure there is nothing negative posted concerning either the tests it develops or the company itself. They are abetted in that by the thousands of school systems that use their tests (which for PARCC is all of those that administer those particular tests).

My kids are 30, 28 and almost 21. Their elementary and middle and high schools had doors that locked automatically -- except the front door. The kids can get out but they can't get in. Unless of course someone opens the door for them -- which is what happens. But it does reduce the possibility of random people 'sneaking' into the school.

Hannity is grasping at straws. He doesn't even believe what he's saying. Even if it were possible for schools to track their students' social media, the kids would just go underground. His "plan" doesn't accomplish anything other than perpetuating a police state.

Social media should be monitored, but that doesn’t mean content has to be restricted. If a cop hears 2 guys in a bar talking about murdering someone, I would hope they would take that seriously. If Facebook finds someone posting about shooting up a school, they should take that seriously too and I’d be ticked if the police didn’t look into it.
