When I first saw your link, I thought 'God, that must be at one of those 'on the expressway' gas stations on the Hutchinson River Parkway'....but the link turns out to be a reference to a gas station in Hell's Kitchen (Manhattan).
I just checked the heat maps online (on albanygasprices.com, which is an offshoot of gasbuddy.com), and NO PLACE is posting $5.00 gas in NY. The highest prices I am seeing is between $3.00 and $4.00 in the lower Hudson Valley, mostly Westchester County. I am in Albany County and paid $2.93 for gas just yesterday.
Around here (Northern part of the Houston Metro) the lowest price is the same $2.59 the OP noticed in her area in Tennessee.
I checked my last zip code in the SF Bay Area....$3.49 - $4.09 ($3.49 at an all cash station)
And, it's the average price in Manhattan is $3.18. But it's a nice headline.
There's only 31 stations in all of Manhattan and only 1 south of 23rd St. The land under that station is worth more than the profit to be made from a decade's worth of gas sales.

Interesting. I bet I could find that many stations in the city of Albany alone. Lord knows there are MANY stations up here into the hundreds.
I have a feeling that by August of this year we shall look back at this thread and wonder why we moaned about gas prices rising to $3 or so. It shall get worse.
Or course, we must recall that when gas prices were on the rise in 2012, President Trump tweeted:
"Gas prices are about to hit a record high during the Labor Day weekend. @BarackObama could have stopped this."
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 31, 2012
This past April, the President tweeted:
"Looks like OPEC is at it again. With record amounts of Oil all over the place, including the fully loaded ships at sea, Oil prices are artificially Very High! No good and will not be accepted!"
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 20, 2018
Mr. Trump: why don't you place a phone call to the ministers of OPEC?
Of course, Mr. Trump's pulling us out of the Iranian agreement will affect oil prices. Oddly, while President Putin of Russia publically requested that his friend stay with the agreement, unofficially (so it has been reported elsewhere) Mr. Putin is well pleased at the rise in oil prices, which benefits his country greatly.
Saudi Arabia was the first country Mr. Trump visited as President. They were also pleased by 1) the Iranian withdrawal; and 2) the resultant rise in oil prices. It had been reported that the Saudi's wanted oil prices to hit $80 per barrel; done. Now, they want $100 per barrel.
President Obama had enacted new fuel economy standards for the automakers to reach by various deadlines, designed for drivers (including delivery) to save money. Of course, Mr. Trump wants to roll these standards back, so that consumers will use more gasoline.

This feels a lot like a C-O-N-spiracy! (1990 In Living Color).
