The AP article uses a narrower month-on-month analysis windowed on the figures for April 2018 compared to January 2017.
All that the AP needed to do to come across as honest and objective was to point out that Trump's figures are correct when it comes to the broader trend, but express concern over a rise in apprehensions since the start of FY2018.
Instead, they turn it into yet another "Trump is a buffoon" story, then wonder why people consider the mainstream press discredited.

I find that hard to believe, though. I think they were already down under Obama.
