If that's the argument you want to make, keep in mind that Texas's Latino population is considerably higher than Georgia's.

Keep in mind the very low voter turnout of that demographic compared to others...

lol what? Are you blaming demographics for Texas being so crazy conservative? Texas is conservative because that's your culture, embrace it. Even the way you broke away from mexico was because mexico wanted to abolish slavery.

Mississippi has more blacks than Georgia but is more conservative. California doesn't have many black people anymore per capita but we're one of the most progressive states in the country. What's Texas' excuse?

Florida isn't very progressive, but in a region where there is no "truly" progressive state by political standards, than I guess it makes sense for Florida to win this poll. South Florida is probably the most progressive "non-college town" metropolitan area in the South. What other counties in the South vote 60%+ dem in every election that are the size of the 3 counties in SoFla? Even with the Castro Cubans and other rather wealthier "Conservative" White Latinos from other nations, Dade County is still reliably Blue. Again, overall Florida is a Conservative swing state, but outside of Virginia(which wasn't listed) it's the closest to Blue that you're going to get in the South. North Carolina is pretty close too. GA might elect the first Black female Governor in the US, so keep your eyes on GA.

They aren't as large geographically or population wise (everyone knows we have small Counties), but Atlanta's two core Counties of Fulton & DeKalb are reliably blue. This is John Lewis and gay City and State elected officials Country.

Georgia's second largest County, Gwinnett (around 900,000+ people) which is directly NE of Fulton and DeKalb, is turning purple before our eyes. They just elected Georgia's first gay Asian State Legislator.

Politically, this is still two States. The Metro is on the verge of having the majority of the population, so exciting times are ahead for progressives.

I honestly thought Gwinnett was already Blue. Not surprised about Fulton and DeKalb. ATL/Fulton County has always been one of the more progressive cities, dating back to MLK. It's always been the metro and outer Greater as well as the rest of the state that was holding GA back. Yep, GA is changing.

Florida can be socially progressive but a lot of the liberals in Florida are wealthy NYers that moved to Florida to avoid paying high taxes so they are mostly fiscally conservative. When I lived in NYC and Boston a lot of the wealthy were fiscally conservative even thou they were DEMS.

I wouldn't call Tennessee the most progressive state in the South but it's definitely on the rise. Nashville has high immigrant populations like you wouldn't believe and growing and the Black population is pretty high as well not to mention the city seems not to be segregated by race which is a big thing for me. I like the fact that every one is Together and if it is any separation, it's more or less based off what you can afford than race based, that's something I don't like about Atlanta or Georgia as a whole. In Georgia the Blacks are over here, the whites are over there the Hispanics are down there and a little bit of mixture,,, I hate that!! I would have to more or less give this one to Florida even though it has its faults. I couldn't give it to Georgia though. Imo the state is still just too segregated in spite of it's influx of Latino's, blacks or other wise. Even having a Black female Governor isn't going to change this about Georgia. IMO you can have a large Hispanic, Black, or immigrant populations and still not be progressive because a lot of southern states do but it's how you interact, intermingle, desegregate yourself that makes a place progressive!

Why do people on C-D keep on saying Virginia, and to a lesser extent, North Carolina, isn't a Southern state? As if you can just erase hundreds of years of history and culture because of transplants concentrated in a few regions. Virginia is the ORIGINAL Southern state. No amount of transplants in Nova will change that. Sure, the entire state isn't "Southern," but what Southern state is besides maybe Mississippi? If Florida is going to be on this poll, there's no damn reason why Virginia should be left off.
