In Portland? No, I doubt they’re lying. But they should get a closed sign and have someone tell them at the door they’re closed and not taking anymore customers.
And that specific person would still cry racism because the circumstances never matter with idiots like this.
You think the bakery's owner was lying when he stated the door can't be locked while customers are still in the store, per the Fire Marshal.
Change the door hardware- there are several types of door handles/push bars that allow them to open from inside but still be locked to the exterior.
You can also check into the equivalent of simple non-keyed dead bolts. One counter service restaurant I frequent has those- at closing they flip them but let remaining patrons finish as they go about closing. When you leave, you wave to the nearest employee, flip the lock, and walk out- they relock it behind you.
Or put up a sign at the entrance that reads- we stop taking orders at 9pm, lobby closes at 9:15.
$5 says this person simply caved to your typical belligerent/entitled customer and now is coming up with an excuse since they've received blowback from the other side.

We have a door at my 2nd job. I can go out once "locked" but cant come back in.

True, but if they did that the owners would be able to convince most people of the policy. The rest are just looking for something to be mad about. You can’t fix that.
If it were two black women that were denied service and then some white woman walked in afterward and received service because she was white what do you call that?
Read the article.
Two other white women who came in prior were turned away as the store was closed.

Sure he caved to the backlash.
Your idea and many others make sense. He intends to start using a CLOSED sign. otoh, he's been in business for 12 years and obviously never had a big enough problem before to worry about how he closed for the day. Now that one person took offense and started a ruckus, his method for closing becomes a big deal.

Welcome to the land of the perpetually offended!
