This is a chicken or the egg question. I think the process started earlier but was accelerated by the housing shortage after WWII and the creation of interstate/freeways to move workers from the newer suburban communities back into the city. With the onslaught of the Baby Boom the legacy cities, as they were, became unsustainable. There were other forces that developed after the original seeds were sown. The land was cheaper and accessible for development. It's not just what happened to the cities but we actually destroyed some of the best agricultural land to build tract houses and strip malls.

We need better public transportation in this country. But it seems to be hated by large segments of our population.


At least we're getting a new street car here in Milwaukee. I hope they'll continue with their expansion plans but I have a feeling the complainers are going to win even though they live no where near Milwaukee.
