You are referring to mostly corrupt southern European countries, but that has nothing to do with payroll taxes there. Payroll taxes are just as high or higher in countries like Germany, Austria, Netherlands etc but with a fraction of the unemployment rate of the southern countries.
LOL. O/S of Germany we would call EU populations, states, and many of them would be very small, minor states at that.

Yes, flat job growth for many years now, around 2m every year for at least half a decade. EMPLOYMENT figures among the lowest in the OECD. And median incomes not budging for decades.
I would happily support much higher payroll taxes and a federal sales tax. You on the other hand want to eliminate the already low payroll taxes in America and then pretend you want some EU-style system.
Not to mention the Ordoliberalism which permeates all of Germany i.e. its people, their culture, economic systems, the relationship to 'workers collectives, philosophies & so on.
True. Ironically, this started because the German elites were afraid that too many Germans were moving to America in the latter half of the 19th century, as it was a national security threat. So they were forced to provide a better deal for the German people.

We'd have to implement 25% VAT, both flatten the income tax brackets and increase the top marginal income tax rate, and put the middle class in the highest tax bracket right along with the top 1%. Are you on board with that?
