They probably had secretaries. That's how the work got done.

In a winery, no problem. I did my 30 years in the power industry, nuclear and fossi fuel and in that field, it would be a stupid idea.l

However, most of the staff, myself included, would regularly step out back and smoke a little something special. Really made the work more bearable. Nothing like having a little buzz to make you super nice to the customers.
It would have made the work go faster, for sure, but I'd question my ability to remember orders after a toke or two.

I worked at a liquor store many years ago and it was like being at a keg party or something. Customers would come in and buy me shots, and friends would come in an hour or so before closing and drink a little with me before we'd go to the bar after we closed up. Had a little section off to the side where there'd always be people hanging out and drinking. It was a lot of fun. The owner didn't technically allow it but the drawer always came out OK so he looked the other way. We'd even go out back and smoke a little weed from time to time.

I also had a more corporate type job where people would sometimes go out for lunch and they'd have a beer or two. Even the managers. I tried it a couple of times but didn't like it. I'd feel tired at the end of the day. It wasn't like they provided another beer at 2 or 3 o'clock to keep your buzz going. Coffee is better at work than beer is.
