Maher is explicitly a comedian with a show that is aimed at political satire/humor.
Hannity is a buffoon who masquerades as a journalist on a news network.
And while Maher generally leans left he has said plenty of things that ticked off both left and the right. By contrast, Hannity is like a parrot...you always know what he'll say as he ALWAYS toes the line for the hard right.
One of the best pieces Maher has done in the last 10 years was this clip (from 2015) which was a take down of the entitled victimhood on the far left and far right.

1) Totally agree, I just grabbed someone from the right as a counter-point not meant to be directly equivalent.
2) I would argue that "news network" these days are not the CNN of 15-20 years ago (and neither is current CNN). It's now generally the nuts and bolts news like a plane crashed in Iowa or someone is the new prime minister somewhere....PLUS a bunch of infotainment rhetoric aimed at a wedge segment to generate ratings.
The key point is that there should be no expectation of any sort of higher standard for the opinion and talk-show type programs on "news networks" because they're wh*ring for ratings just like any other show out there anywhere.
P.S. It's pretty easy to spot the people around that watch\listen to these types of programs for HOURS a day. They're not exactly rational, open to discussion or even well informed on more than one perspective.
