Both Stone and Caputo, who did not reveal the interaction to congressional investigators, alleged that the man, who called himself Henry Greenberg, was a FBI informant.
“You don’t understand Donald Trump,” Stone said he told the man. “He doesn’t pay for anything.”
Translation: They lied because they attempted to keep the meeting a secret. They were busted due to the text messages and suddenly remembered meeting with a Russian about a $2 million payment for damaging info about Clinton.
Why did they want to hide the meeting from investigators? Why didn't they go to the FBI to report the incident, shortly after the man asked for $2 million?
Both former campaign aides told the newspaper they did not bring up the meeting during their testimony before the House Intelligence Committee because they forgot about the incident.
The men said they remembered the encounter after Caputo was shown past text messages about the meeting during a May 2 interview.

More troubling is why Stone would not immediately report this to the FBI to be investigated. Since he apparently didn't, that means Stone had knowledge of criminal intent and is guilty of being complicit had the deal gone through. If this is a true story, he still isn't off hte hook.
Any ideas why he would put himself in legal jepopardy like that...?
He's the Trump campaign staffer who worked with Russians for many years. He setup the meeting between Roger Stone and a Russian person that said he had dirt on Clinton and wanted $2 million for it.
Caputo "forgot" to tell congress about Russian "dirt for $2 million" meeting when he met with the Congressional Investigators. Instead, the told this to the congress:
"Caputo believes Russia broke into the DNC and leaked emails but insists there was no collusion."

You've got them this time!!!
Refusing to collude with this guy is proof positive they colluded with the Russians!!!

If opposition research from Russia were a crime, Hillary's crew would already be indicted for the Steele dossier.

Hillary had nothing to do with the Steele Dossier. Read Glenn Simpson's testimony begore the Senate Intelligence Committee. I've posted the link thrinty times, and I won't do it again. Google it and read it.
BTW - The RNC was the party responsible for hiring Simpson in the first place.
Roger Stone lied about his meeting with a Russian where dirt on Hillary was mentioned in exchange for $2 million.
Did he later negotiate that $2 million to something else, such as favors to Putin. He told the Russian that Trump doesn't pay for anything. That was a counter offer . Favors wouldn't cost Trump a penny.
If he flatly turned down the offer for dirt, there would be no reason to lie to congress about the meeting.
He "remembers" the meeting a year later after the Mueller team catches him in the lie by showing him text messages about the meeting. Yet he lied to congress the prior year.
He says his only link to Russia is that he enjoys drinking Russian vodka.
