Did anyone else listen to NPR this morning as various people read aloud the full text of the Declaration of Independence?

When I turned on the radio, at first I thought they were talking about rumptydump:

"The history of the present [King of Great Britain] is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, ... and destroyed the lives of our people

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us

a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism

A [Prince], whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people."

Really, could it BE more clear that rumptydump is UNFIT to be President by the standards of our own Declaration of Independence?

Time to start calling rumptydump "GeorgeIIIJr." Wonder if he has porphyria, too?

Last year, some Trump supporters thought NPR was calling for a revolution in real time as they read the Declaration.

I really don't like to burst your bubble but the Revolutionary War is not seen as that as thar important an historical event outside of the US and is largely ignored in terms of history. It's just seen as part of a wider struggle between Britain and France and a prelude to other more impirtant events such as the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.

In terms of the Monarchy and King George III, the Parliamentarians won the English Civil War over a century before and most powers had been transferred to Parliament, and the idea of US representation did have some sympathy in Parliament. As for taxes, Americans paid very liitle tax comparedto the British and Americans also had a higher standard of living.

And why would you? That doesn't make it any less relevant to the history of the United States, the beginnings of which we celebrate today, our Independence Day. We get it. You're British. Of course the Declaration is of little consequence to you.
