It's coming, it's just a matter of when. With Oklahoma voting to legalize medical marijuana, it's clear the tide has turned. Oklahoma is one of the most anti-pot, pro-drug war states so if legal marijuana can happen here, the entire country is ready. Likewise the Republican Party of Texas has come out in favor of decriminalization.
When will Donald Trump get on board and support legal marijuana? Republicans like to pass the buck to Obama for not legalizing it when he was in office but public opinion wasn't quite there yet through most of Obama's Presidency. What is Trump waiting for?
To be honest, doing something that a majority of the country wants like legalizing marijuana could give Trump a boost in popularity outside of his base.
I say within a decade, simply because it won't happen until the Reefer Madness believers are out of office and/or did off. Could be sooner, if it goes to a nationwide vote - which I don't think will happen.

You are probably right. Most elected officials still cling to outdated, false war on drugs propaganda and they aren't going to change their mind. I do find it quite ironic that Republicans think they can keep people from smoking marijuana by making it illegal yet on gun control my the [correct] argument that if guns are illegal that won't keep somebody who really wants one from getting one.
Full legalization where you can just grow your own in your back yard in an unlimited amount and sell it on craigslist if you wish? More than a decade. Federal decriminalization and leaving it up to the states? I think will depend on the 2020 elections.

The officials you refer to are not clinging to outdated, false war on drugs propaganda.
For the most part, they are instead clinging to substantial income from lobbyists representing a number of mega-industries. They will continue to desperately cling as long as politically possible (meaning we are going to have to start voting them out, because no matter how high the polls for legalization reaches, they will not voluntarily POP [pivot on pot] ).
Just FYI, what you are proposing is 50 state laws legalizing pot. While there is a federal law that applies to pot, it is primarily at the state level that these laws are enforced.
There is not going to be a federal law requiring the states to legalize pot, although I would expect a modification in the federal law to allow states to legalize pot in small amounts for recreational use, probably some time during Donald Trump's first term as president, and maybe sometime next year.

The irony works the other way as well. Calling for a ban on firearms while admitting that the war on drugs is a failure takes an amazing amount of cognitive dissonance.
