if guns were completely banned, then congress had best fifure a way to prevent people from putting various chemicals together to create explosives. and that means banning chemicals that we use daily in a huge variety of ways.

Gun deaths would fall dramatically.
It would take a hundred years to get all of the damned things rounded up, but hey, we're already 25 years into the discussion and nothing has happened thus far. At the rate we are going it will be a hundred years before we even get to the point where a ban will be implemented, or at least a feature will be put on the gun where the only person who can fire it is the person who legally bought it. Even then, we'd need a hundred years to get them all corralled and fitted with features which prevent illegal behavior.
But for now, we get a few gun deaths each week. It has become routine....except for the family who looses a loved one. Dotard loves the shootings; NRA funds the Dotard; Going to take a long time to break that cycle.

Imagine what kind of weapons will replace guns a hundred years from now.
C'mon, it's 2018, why don't we have death rays yet?

And if we banned alcohol, how long would it take to get all that booze off the streets? Don't forget, we tried it once and it didn't work out so well. People still drank, but the Mafia made a buttload of money off people drinking. What do you suppose would happen if there were a total gun ban? Don't you think some criminal enterprise would continue to make and sell guns illegally?
I think that isn't going to happen here. We are not an island like Australia, or even like the UK.
We are a very large land mass surrounded by other countries where guns can easily be funneled into the country.
It's illogical to ban guns entirely in the US.
It is not illogical to be smart about how we allow them to be distributed via legal channels.
Yes, yes... criminals criminals... but, most of us do not want to be criminals and most criminals are using guns on each other, not the rest of us.
