If Republicans really think this trade war is a good idea, why is the Chamber of Commerce coming out very publicly against it?

In Louisiana, the Chamber estimated that 553,000 jobs and $5.3 billion in exports are at risk.

In Alabama, the Chamber estimated that 567,5000 jobs and $3.6 billion in exports are at risk.

In South Dakota, the Chamber estimated that 130,000 jobs and $129 million in exports are at risk.

Trump's trade critics are wrong -- His tariffs could bring major benefits to America | Fox News

The president’s critics accuse him of recklessly starting a trade war that will be bad for America and the global economy. They couldn’t be more wrong – and here’s why.
Completely agree...

The chamber of commerce is looking after it's short term interest... What do I care about their own self-interest... Especially when the US will win and everything is better because if it... When is the last time you were concerned about my welfare? But you did it anyways, huh?

People love to point out that we can "win" the tradewar with Canada. What they miss is that with Canada they are importing more from us then we are from them. We already were winning that trade situation, and are just bullying them so we can win even more. And we can probably win that one because they are so much smaller.

Meanwhile they don't say much about China or the EU-the big ones. Thats because we probably can't win those. And it possible that those folks will ramp up Canadian trade so we won't win that one.

Trump's tariffs are further helping China, who wants to be the global leader on trade through the "Belt and Road" initiative.

"Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) — his vision for putting Beijing at the center of the global economy through $1 trillion in new infrastructure, trade deals and other connections — has encountered trouble in recent months, creating a backlash among both participating and prospective countries."

"Rising tariffs could shift supply chains, pushing China and BRI countries closer together. On Thursday, for example, China is expected to impose an additional 25% import tax on more than 500 U.S. goods, including soybeans. Naturally, Beijing will look to substitute some U.S. imports with goods from elsewhere. A loss for American farmers could be a boon for Kazakhstan and other countries that have been deepening their transportation ties with China through the BRI."

Pretty soon, they will have no friends except Russia and North Korea. Even Japan has started working with China more since the U.S. pulled out of the TPP. U.S. farmers would be in a much better condition if Trump hadn't pulled out of the TPP. Mexico is one of our largest milk customers and they have been looking at sourcing that with New Zealand instead, as if U.S. dairy farmers weren't suffering enough.

"President Trump's decision to pull the U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, on his third day in office, set the stage for many of the country's current trade disputes."

Canada is free to retaliate with all the tariffs they like, but they're about to run out of bullets. We have all the leverage, they have none. Without access to the US market they will soon have a full fledged economic depression, while we'd be just fine.

Those countries using Canada as a pass through will still trade with the US, just now they'll do it directly, not using Canada as their middle man. Those foreign countries, like Canada, need us more than we need them. We are the prized jewel consumer market that the world not only wants, but needs, access to. What those countries will do is renegotiate trade deals with the US, making them fair.

Pulling out of the TPP was critical. We don't need to join their trade deal in order to trade with those countries. Japan's PM Abe & Trump have been working on bilateral negotiations, don't worry about Japan. How does pulling out of the TPP affect Mexico buying milk from our multinational AG corporations?

Trumps Trade policies should mirror those of our trading partners. Nothing more and nothing less. Add to this we should match subsidizing industry to level the playing fields.

Oh yes, the Chinese are going to be great trading partners.... Look at our 300 billion deficit... EU is going to love deficits... What's printed on paper is different when it comes down to what actually happens... And somehow, I don't think the Chinese are going to send billions of dollars of their wealth to another country to be nice... You can stop with the fairy tale BS...

Agreed. The G7 should have zero trade barriers. The offer was made at the summit.
