About a year before the end of President Obama's second term was up, he attempted to raise the minimum dollar level at which one was eligible for overtime pay to $47,000 a year. This was struck down with the weakest of excuses by a Republican judge in December of 2016. The judge said that he struck it down so that the new President wouldn't have to do it.

Free overtime is a form of corporate welfare and the only way to police how much of your free time your boss is allowed to take from you is to make them pay you for it at time and a half. The current level of $23,660 is absurdly low. Congress may change hands next year. The time to start building a fire under their feet is now.

When I started as a teller at a bank many years ago I was consistently working over 40hrs a week as were many of my co-workers. None of us were getting our over time pay until about 12 of us went to HR and demanded it. By the time I received it they owed me over $5k in OT! About 2 months after that they promoted me to Assistant Branch Manager which was a salaried (no OT) position.

As management and a salaried employee, I understand that you're going to work OT and not get paid, but as an hourly worker, NO WAY would I do that! I would find another job first.

$23,660 is an absurdly low number to base overtime eligibility on. I sympathize with you. This November we will have an opportunity to change the makeup of Congress. Even if we can't get them to raise the overtime threshold we can stop them from doing further damage.

Why should people on salary be expected to work overtime for free? Salaries are supposed to 'even out', some weeks you will not work 40 hours ,but still get paid for 40 and other weeks, you will work more, so it all evens out at the end, however if you are always working 40+...there is a problem.

I get paid for OT so I guess I can't comment. Everyone I know gets paid for OT.

Some people are able to choose comp time. I wish I could.

I work OT many times (on travel), but my company make us take comp time....which is fine with me...

But we are held to a strict number of hours each pay period, unless we are on travel....

What line of work are you and your friends in because I don't know anyone who gets paid OT unless they work hourly or part of a union AND in non-managerial positions.

I don't get OT at all either as I'm salaried for a private firm. The private firms are notorious for making you work beyond 40 hours but not paying you OT. They are also quick to sack you if you don't put in your minimum 40 hours every week. You're lucky if you get comp time as that's based on a manager's discretion!
