The state of Virginia gave over $500,000 to the Bachelorette "reality" show for them to film a single episode in Virginia and make some references to Virginia being for lovers - a tourist slogan the state uses to market itself.
$300,000.00 of VA taxpayer money went to the Bachelorette as straight up profit and another $236,130.00 went to defray the costs of producing an episode in Virginia including travel, hotels, meals, and activities for the stars and entire production team. Virginia says that it is great advertising, but many experts say this claim is dubious.
Virginia also pays the TV show Homeland to bring attention to the state for tourists. Homeland has gotten $700,000.00 in straight up cash from Virginia taxpayers and $6,500,000.00 in tax credits for filming in Virginia and portraying the state in a positive light. Virginia claims that this is money well spent and helps tourism.
